Bespoke Driveway Gates, Made to Measure

Portara Automation designs, fabricates and installs bespoke driveway gates in steel, steel/composite, aluminium and timber. Every gate is made for your entrance – supplied as a manual gate or built into a complete electric gate system.

Gate makers, not just gate fitters

Many gate companies choose from a catalogue of standard sizes and styles, then make the opening fit the gate. We work the other way round. Because we design and fabricate gates ourselves, your gates are made to suit the entrance – its width, its levels, the posts or piers either side, and the character of the property behind it.

That matters most on the entrances that standard gates don’t suit: wide or uneven openings, sloping drives, period homes, rural properties and contemporary builds where the gate needs to match the architecture. It also means the gate is built with its future use in mind. If it’s going to be automated, the frame, hinge points and motor fixings are planned from the start rather than improvised later.

We make bespoke gates for homes, farms, estates and commercial sites throughout East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent.

Steel, composite, aluminium and timber gates

Each material has its own strengths. We’ll recommend what suits your design, your entrance and how much maintenance you want to take on.

Steel gates

Strong, rigid and endlessly adaptable, steel suits everything from simple vertical-bar gates to intricate decorative metalwork. It’s our go-to for wide spans, heavy-duty use and designs with real presence.

Steel/composite gates

A fabricated steel frame clad with composite boards gives a solid, private, contemporary gate that won’t rot, warp or need painting. A popular choice for modern homes and for sliding gates.

Aluminium gates

Lightweight and naturally corrosion-resistant, aluminium is ideal for wide openings, low-maintenance designs and automated gates where weight matters.

Timber gates

Hardwood gates bring warmth and tradition, from classic five-bar field gates to solid boarded and framed designs that suit rural and period properties. Where a made-to-measure gate isn’t needed, we can also supply and install standard timber gates.

Designing your gates

Every project starts with a conversation about how the entrance looks and how you use it. Do you want privacy or a view through? Will the gates be automated? Do vehicles, horses or deliveries need to get through? Is there a pedestrian route?

  • We measure the opening accurately, including levels and any slope across or behind it
  • You can bring your own design, sketch or photos, or we can suggest options to suit the property
  • We agree the style, material, infill, height, finish and hardware
  • We check the design is strong enough for its size and suitable for automation if required

Fabrication

Once the design is agreed, your gates are fabricated to the measurements taken on site. Doing the fabrication ourselves means we control the details that decide how well a gate performs over the years: the frame section and bracing, the weight, the hinge and pivot points, how boards and infill panels are fixed, and how the gate meets the posts and the ground.

We also fabricate the parts that go with the gate – brackets, motor mounts, post caps, drop bolts, keeps and other fittings – so they’re made to suit your installation rather than adapted from a standard kit.

Finishes

The finish protects the gate as well as defining how it looks, so we choose it to suit the material and the setting:

  • Steel needs proper corrosion protection. We’ll advise on suitable protective coatings and colour finishes for your gate and its location.
  • Aluminium is typically supplied with a durable coloured finish and needs very little maintenance.
  • Composite boards come in a range of colours and textures, and don’t need painting or staining.
  • Timber can be left to weather naturally or treated with oils and stains, and benefits from periodic re-treatment.

Ironmongery such as hinges, latches and locks is chosen to match the gate in both appearance and strength.

Manual gates or a complete automated system

A bespoke gate doesn’t have to be electric. Plenty of our gates are supplied and installed as manual gates with good-quality hinges, latches and drop bolts. If you’d like automation now or in the future, we design the gates, posts and fixings to suit, and can lay ducting during installation so adding motors later is straightforward.

When the gates are automated, we supply and install the operators, control panel, photocells, safety edges and access control – remotes, keypads, intercoms or GSM – as one coordinated system. Read more about our gate automation and complete automatic gate installations.

The installation process

  1. Enquiry and photos. Tell us about your entrance and the look you’re after.
  2. Site visit and measure. We measure the opening, check levels and ground conditions, and look at posts, piers, power and drainage.
  3. Design and quote. We agree the design, material and finish, and send a clear quote.
  4. Fabrication. The gates and fittings are made to your measurements.
  5. Groundwork and posts. New posts, foundations or sliding gate tracks are prepared, along with ducting for any automation.
  6. Hanging and finishing. The gates are hung, aligned and adjusted so they move freely and close neatly.
  7. Automation and handover. If automated, the system is set up, safety-tested and demonstrated to you.

Already have gates that need attention? We also carry out electric gate repairs, including mechanical repairs to the gate itself.

Bespoke driveway gate FAQs

What is the difference between bespoke gates and off-the-shelf gates?

Off-the-shelf gates come in standard sizes and designs, so they often need packing out, cutting down or compromising to fit. A bespoke gate is designed and made for your opening, your levels and your property, with the frame, hinges and fixings planned for the way it will be used, including any automation.

Can you make a gate from my own design or photo?

Yes. Send us a sketch, a drawing or photos of gates you like and we will work out how to make it practical for your entrance, choosing suitable materials, frame sizes and hardware, and suggesting any changes needed for strength or automation.

Which gate material needs the least maintenance?

Aluminium and steel/composite gates need the least looking after, usually little more than an occasional clean. Properly protected steel is also durable. Timber is beautiful but needs periodic treatment to keep it looking its best. We help you weigh up appearance, privacy, weight and upkeep before you decide.

Can a bespoke gate be automated later?

Yes. If you would like manual gates now and automation in the future, we can design the gates, posts and fixings to be automation-ready and lay ducting during the installation, which makes adding motors later much simpler.

How long do bespoke gates take to make?

Lead times depend on the design, the material and the finish, and on how busy the workshop is at the time. We confirm the expected timescale when we send your quote, and we plan any groundwork so that posts and foundations are ready when the gates are.

Do you make matching pedestrian gates?

Yes. We can make a matching pedestrian gate so the whole entrance has a consistent look, and it can be fitted with a suitable lock, closer or access control if required.
