Buxted & the surrounding Weald
From village driveways to long country entrances, Portara Automation finds and fixes faults on electric and automatic gates in Buxted and the nearby East Sussex villages – and can upgrade older systems so they’re reliable again.
Many of the properties in and around Buxted sit in a rural setting – set back from the lane, surrounded by trees, often with a long drive and an entrance that takes a real battering from the weather. That makes a difference to how gate automation behaves and why it fails.
Portara Automation designs, fabricates and installs bespoke gates as well as repairing automation, so when we arrive to look at a fault we’re not only thinking about the motor. We look at the gate, the posts, the hinges or track, the wiring route and the access control together, then recommend the simplest repair that will actually solve the problem.
That often means repairing or upgrading what you already have rather than replacing the whole system.
If your gate is misbehaving, one of these will probably sound familiar. Each has a handful of likely causes, and a proper fault-finding visit is about testing them in turn rather than guessing.
We start with the basics: power to the control panel, fuses, the manual release, and whether the control board is receiving a command. A single faulty safety input – a photocell, safety edge or stop button – is enough to stop a gate working, so these get checked early. From there we move on to the motors, capacitors and the control board itself.
This usually points to the gate’s safety and force settings doing their job. A photocell being triggered, a safety edge that’s damaged, a gate that has become stiff on its hinges, or an operator struggling against wind load on a solid gate can all cause it. We find the cause rather than just turning the force up.
Intermittent faults are the ones people put up with longest. In a wooded area like Buxted, leaves and debris blocking photocells or collecting in underground motor boxes and sliding tracks are frequent culprits. Water getting into junction boxes, cables damaged by rodents or garden work, and loose terminals are others. We test under realistic conditions to catch them.
Remote controls and transmitters can fail, lose their programming or simply run short on range, especially on long drives. Intercoms and keypads bring their own issues – a GSM intercom that has lost its signal or SIM, an ageing wired intercom with a damaged cable run, or a keypad that’s been worn out by the weather. We check the handset, the receiver, aerial placement and the access-control wiring before suggesting new equipment.
Grinding, clicking or labouring motors often mean a worn gearbox or an operator working far harder than it should because the gate itself has moved. Hinges wear, posts lean and heavy timber gates can drop over time. Correcting the gate frequently fixes the “motor problem” and protects the operator from further damage.
Our electric gate repairs in Buxted cover the whole system, from the electronics right through to the gate leaf.

Control panels, power supplies, receivers, cabling and connections. Faulty boards can be replaced and set up to suit your gates.
Photocells, safety edges and obstacle detection tested, repaired or added, so the gates stop and reverse when they should.
GSM and wired intercoms, video entry, keypads, remote controls and additional transmitters.
Hinges, rollers, tracks, re-hanging and realignment, and repairs to timber, metal and composite gates. If a gate is past saving, we can make a bespoke replacement.
Regular checks of moving parts, motors, safety devices and access control to reduce the chance of an unexpected breakdown.
If your gates were automated some years ago, you don’t necessarily need to start again. Sensible upgrades can make an older installation safer, more reliable and easier to live with:
We’ll tell you honestly whether an upgrade is worthwhile or whether a new automatic gate installation would be better value. There’s more about how we approach electric gate repairs and upgrades on our main repairs page.
