Fault diagnosis and fault finding
We work through the system methodically – power supply, control board, inputs, safety devices, motors and the gate itself – so the real cause is found and fixed, not just the symptom.
Uckfield & surrounding villages
Portara Automation repairs, services and upgrades electric and automatic gates for homes and businesses in Uckfield and the surrounding area. We track down the fault, explain what we’ve found in plain English and get your entrance working properly again.
When an electric gate stops behaving, it’s rarely convenient. You might be stuck at the end of the drive with a car full of shopping, or you may have had to leave the gates open overnight because they won’t close. Our job is to work out why it’s happening, rather than simply swapping parts until something works.
Because Portara Automation also designs, fabricates and installs complete gate systems, we understand how the gate, the hinges or track, the posts, the motors and the electronics all affect each other. A “motor fault” is sometimes a dropped hinge or a gate that has swollen after a wet winter, and a “broken remote” can turn out to be a failed receiver or a tripped safety device. Looking at the whole entrance means the repair lasts.
Around Uckfield we work on everything from modern town-edge driveways to long rural entrances on farms and country properties, with swing gates, sliding gates, underground motors and ram-arm operators all common.
Most call-outs start with a simple symptom. Here are the areas we check and repair on electric and automatic gates in and around Uckfield.
We work through the system methodically – power supply, control board, inputs, safety devices, motors and the gate itself – so the real cause is found and fixed, not just the symptom.
Gates that don’t respond at all, open but won’t close, stop halfway or reverse unexpectedly. These are often caused by a safety input, limit settings, a failed capacitor or a mechanical obstruction.
The gate that works perfectly when we arrive but fails on wet mornings. Intermittent problems usually come down to moisture, loose connections, damaged cabling or photocells drifting out of alignment, and we test for each.
Repairs to ram-arm, articulated-arm, underground and sliding gate operators, including worn gearboxes, seized release mechanisms, water-damaged underground motors and operators that are no longer strong enough for the gate.
Control board faults, blown fuses, tripping power supplies, corroded terminals and wiring damage. Where a board is beyond repair we can fit a suitable replacement and set it up to match your gates.
Photocells stop the gate closing on a car or a person. We clean, realign, repair or replace them, and check that the system reacts correctly when the beam is broken.
Damaged, perished or disconnected safety edges can stop a gate working altogether, or worse, leave it without protection. We test, repair and fit safety edges where they’re needed.
Audio and video intercoms, GSM (mobile) intercoms, keypads and other access control that has stopped releasing the gate, lost its signal or needs updating for a new household or tenants.
Remotes that have stopped working, poor range, lost fobs and adding extra transmitters. We check whether the issue is the handset, the receiver or the aerial before recommending anything new.
A tired or unreliable gate system doesn’t automatically need ripping out. In many cases we can repair the existing installation, or upgrade just the parts that are letting it down, and keep the rest of your investment working for years.
If we do think replacement is the better option – for example if parts are no longer available or the gate itself has failed – we’ll explain why and give you the choice, and we can carry out a complete automatic gate installation if needed. Automation can only work as well as the gate it is moving. A sagging timber gate, a dropped hinge, a bent frame or a sliding gate running on a damaged track will strain the motors and eventually cause electrical faults too.
As gate makers as well as automation engineers, we can deal with the physical side of the job where appropriate: adjusting or replacing hinges, re-hanging and realigning gates, correcting posts that have moved, repairing timber, metal and composite gates, and fixing sliding gate tracks and guide rollers. The clay soils common across this part of the Weald can move with the seasons, so post and hinge alignment is always something we check.
If the existing gate is beyond sensible repair, we can design and fabricate a bespoke replacement gate in hardwood, composite or metal and automate it as one complete system.
Like any mechanical equipment that works outdoors all year, electric gates benefit from regular attention. A service is a good opportunity to catch small problems before they leave you locked in or out.
Underground motors are worth particular attention around Uckfield, where heavy rain can leave low-lying drives waterlogged. Blocked drainage in the motor boxes is a common cause of failures we see.
As well as Uckfield itself, we regularly look after gates in the villages and countryside around the town, including Maresfield and Nutley towards Ashdown Forest, Framfield and Blackboys to the east, and Five Ash Down and Buxted to the north-east.
